Global conference leaves impact on Houston
IIT 2013 Global Conference drew international attention; created innovative dialogue
HOUSTON – December 9, 2013 – Over 1600 world leaders, energy experts, technology professionals and engineers from around the globe came together in Houston this past weekend for the IIT 2013 Global Conference at the Hilton Americas. The conference, hosted by Houston-based alumni of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), marked the first time the annual conference made a stop in Southern USA.
Witty Bindra, Conference Chair and IIT alumnus, said, “On behalf of the Houston-based IIT alumni, I want to thank over 90 speakers for taking the time and effort to attend the conference and create meaningful dialog and discussion throughout the weekend. Highlights from the weekend included:
• Amartya Sen, Nobel Laureate, Professor at Harvard University, discussed ways to rebuild India for a more assured future;
• Vicente Fox, Former President of Mexico, spoke about the importance of developing STEM talent in emerging nations;
• Andrew Gould, Chairman, BG Group, outlined challenges and trends in the oil and gas industry; and
• Gene Kranz, Flight Director, Apollo 13 Mission, NASA, provided the keynote address to over 1200 banquet attendees.
With the theme of “Inspiring Innovation for Tomorrow,” the IIT 2013 Global Conference chose STEEL threads – Sustainability, Technology, Education, Energy and Life Sciences – as the five key areas for weaving innovative solutions. Over 22 hours of panel discussions, programming and events were held over the three-day conference, focusing on the STEEL threads and identifying and developing solutions to help make the world a better place for future generations.
Pratish Kanani, Vice-Chair of the conference emphasized, “The program was outstanding, the execution was flawless, the entertainment was high-energy, and the food was great. In short, the conference was a success. ”
