Abhay Sawant, an IIT Bombay alumnus, is founder and CEO of Busy Dolphin, a digital marketing platform serving small business and organizations. Prior to this he founded Mobeus World, a mobile marketing company after a long career in telecom industry. He is the current president of IIT Alumni Association of North Texas (IITNT).
Aruna Subramanian has over 20 years of international experience in operations, HR, strategy, board and investment management with Schlumberger Oilfield Services, Shell Technology Ventures and Kenda Capital. Currently she runs her own company helping startup companies and investment funds.
Klaus W Hambuechen
Klaus W. Hambuechen is a partner at The Angels’ Forum (TAF) in Mountain View, CA. He serves as Consulting Professor, Department of Radiology at Stanford University and on the Board of several Life Science and Healthcare Device companies. Till his retirement from Siemens in 2010 Klaus held for 20 years CEO position in healthcare imaging.”
Mahesh P. Joshi, PhD
Mahesh P. Joshi is The Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program and an Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship and Global Strategy at the School of Management, George Mason University since 2002.
Dr. Raj Menon, an IIT Bombay alumnus, is Founder, President and CEO of Flat World Design, a full-service Promotional Marketing Agency based out of Dallas, TX. He is also the founding president and a board member of the IIT Alumni Association of North Texas, (IITNT) which was the first Pan-IIT Alumni organization to be officially registered in Texas.
Sanjay Vankude, an IIT Bombay alumnus, has more than 20 years of operating and strategic experience in Software Technology industry as an entrepreneur, investor, advisor and executive. He founded IMS, a training institute for software technology in 1993 and secured two private investors. A placement and staffing firm SysPro Solutions was co-founded later that was acquired by Claremont Technology.
Satyam Priyadarshy, PhD
Dr. Satyam Priyadarshy, an IIT Bombay alumnus, is Venture Idealist, Scientist, Technologist and extensive business acumen. He is currently VP of Data Science at Acxiom, Founder of ReIgnite Strategy, Inc. and is involved with multiple startups as an entrepreneur, investor, and board member. He is also Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University. He is an author of 30+ papers and speaker of over 70+ talks.
Srinivas (Benné) Betté, PhD
Srinivas (Benné) Betté, an IIT Madras alumnus, is the Chairman of Quasitum Inc., a company he founded in 1998, which is involved in energy, software technology products/services and infrastructure businesses. Currently, he also serves on the Advisory Board of Cairn India Ltd., an $11B oil and gas company.
The final round will be held at Hilton Americas, Houston, TX during PANIIT 2013 conference.

a) The plan must be an original idea for a business in operation for two years or less or have not yet reached cash flow positive financial status.
b) The principal business officers/members are 18 years or older at the time of entry.
c) Businesses can include, but are not limited to: technology, bio-technology, green technologies, medical, advanced manufacturing, agriculture and agri-products, engineering and consulting.
d) The business is not engaged primarily in retail sales, real estate, or other professional services such as accounting, law or architecture.
e) Participants that previously have won a first, second or third place are not eligible
The winners will be determined from all entrants that present their plan at PANIIT conference.
a) The presentation is no longer than 7 minutes, followed by Q&A for five minutes each.
b) A panel of judges consisting of entrepreneurs and business leaders will make decisions.
c) The judging panel will evaluate the plans on the basis of:
d) In the event of a tie, the judges will select the plan that has the higher score under “Reasonable opportunity for success of the company.” All decisions regarding the criteria will be made solely by the organizers and hosts. All decisions of the judges are final. These Official Rules and the decisions of the judging panel are final and binding in all respects.
NOTE: There is no guarantee, expressed or implied, that any business will receive an award. Should no entries into the competition meet the entry criteria, should no entry have a reasonable chance for success and should the selection committee determine no winner exists for that year of the competition, no award will be made for that year and the award money will be used for the following year’s competition. The odds of winning a prize depend on the skill of the entrants and the number of entries received. All taxes associated with the prize are the sole responsibility of the prize winner. Prizes are not transferable.

Hersh has a great passion for the up-liftment of rural woman in India. Hersh has adopted several schools for young girls in India and he has taken pledge to help at least over 100,000 rural girls who have limited resources. Hersh has been donating his entire personal income to charitable causes for last eight years. Hersh created one of the largest school systems for young children in US and India. Hersh is also helping many yoga centers for development of alternative yoga therapy to treat mental illness patients.
Hersh was awarded “distinguished alumnus” award for his contribution to society by IIT Roorkee in 2011.
Hersh Kumar obtained his Bachelor of Engineering from the prestigious IIT Roorkee with a gold medal in 1978. Hersh obtained his M.S. in Industrial Engineering from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan.
Rick Hunter heads the Houston office of Lexbridge International, a boutique investment bank that provides mergers & acquisitions advice and other corporate finance services to middle market companies in a broad range of industries.
Rick has over 30 years of business experience in investment banking and industry. During his previous tenure with Morgan Keegan & Co. and Southcoast Capital Corporation, Mr. Hunter advised companies on mergers & acquisitions and helped fund their growth from early stage private placements to IPO’s and publicly registered follow on offerings. His experience also includes serving as special adviser to company boards of directors to assist them in the evaluation of strategic alternatives. Industry experience includes oil & gas, oilfield service, branded consumer products, business services, industrial and private label manufacturers, retail, software and technology, shipbuilding, and environmental services.
Mr. Hunter’s industrial experience includes 10 years with Tenneco, Inc. which was a large international conglomerate with divisions involved in chemicals, packaging, shipbuilding, oil & gas, natural gas pipelines, insurance, real estate, and automotive parts.
Mr. Hunter earned an M.B.A. from the University of Houston, and holds the Certified Valuation Analyst designation as granted by the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts.
Dan Watkins has over 20 years’ experience in operating and investing roles with technology and startup companies, particularly in bioscience and advanced materials. Prior to co-founding the Mercury Fund, Dan was the founder and Managing Partner of A3 Associates, a Houston-based venture firm focused on seed-stage investments in university and research center-based technology transfer opportunities. In this capacity, Dan co-founded Nanospectra Biosciences and X-EMI. He has also been awarded three National Science Foundation grants as Principal Investigator for life sciences research. Prior to A3 Associates, Dan was a Vice President at Schnitzius & Vaughan, a Houston-based investment-banking firm; and served as worldwide manager for operations and control systems for Scientific Software Intercomp. Dan received his B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Rice University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.
Dan currently sits on the boards of Mercury Fund portfolio companies Deep Imaging, DNAtrix (where he was founding CEO), GlycosBio (founded by Mercury), Illumitex, Swift Biosciences, Sinopsys and Vertos Medical (founded by Mercury venture advisor Don Schomer). Dan is also a co-founder of the Rice Alliance for Technology & Entrepreneurship (Rice Alliance), Rice University’s nationally-recognized initiative devoted to the support of technology commercialization, entrepreneurship education, and the launch of technology companies, including the Rice University Business Plan Competition, the world’s largest graduate-level business plan competition. Outside of Mercury, Dan serves on the advisory boards of BioHouston, the Rice Alliance, and Northwestern University’s Innovation and New Ventures Office.
Aruna Viswanathan is the Chief Underwriting Officer and Co-Founder for Clearspring Capital Group, a private equity fund that provides growth capital to Texas based lower middle market companies. She is also the founder of DSA Commercial, a real estate services company that operates several commercial real estate properties.
Previously, Ms. Viswanathan was the former Vice-President and Director of Operations for the Houston Technology Center (HTC). While at the HTC she helped direct the operational growth of the organization from under 30 to over 65 Houston area startups and launched the Gulf Coast Regional Center for Innovation and Commercialization. Appointed by Governor Rick Perry, Aruna served a four year term as one of 17 members of the Texas Emerging Technology Fund Committee, eventually presiding as Vice-Chair, which was responsible for awarding $200 million to foster the commercialization of emerging technology within the State of Texas.
Aruna began her career as an Associate Engineer for Advanced Micro Devices in the Wafer Fab Quality Control area. After leaving AMD, Aruna joined Motorola’s Wireless Signal Processing Division, specializing in production and testing of digital signal processors and flash memory devices.
Aruna is on the advisory boards of the Houston Technology Center, UH Cullen College of Engineering, Testmasters, and Ingenious, Inc. Aruna is currently a board member and President Elect for the TiE-Houston; part of a global entrepreneurship organization spanning 17 countries. She is also a member of numerous area organizations, including the Rice Alliance and the Technology Executives Club of Houston.
Ms. Viswanathan graduated with a BS and MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. She also received an MBA in Strategy and Entrepreneurship from Rice University.
Jenny is the Director of Operations at SURGE, where she is responsible for running and optimizing the accelerator program, building investor and mentor relationships, and developing additional investment opportunities. Prior to SURGE, Jenny was an investment banking analyst for 3 years. She helped provide financial and strategic advisory services to companies in the Technology, Media, and Telecom sectors for two years and spent the third year focused on mergers and acquisitions services for Government and Commercial Technology companies.
Jenny is a Houston native but left at the age of 13 to pursue a career in violin performance at the Juilliard School in New York City. She subsequently attended Harvard College and received a B.A. in Economics with a minor in Psychology.
In her spare time, Jenny manages alumni affairs for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Foundation, which includes planning and executing the organization’s 50th Anniversary Summit in 2014. As an adventure enthusiast, Jenny has traveled to 25 countries and is an advanced open water diver, seasoned bungee jumper, and professional map reader. She also still fiddles on her violin every once in a while.
